A trip to West Bengal is incomplete without visiting the Sundarbans. A marvel of nature, words can only try to recreate the ethereal beauty of this place.
Created by the confluence of 4 rivers namely, Ganga, Brahmaputra, Meghna and Padma, Sundarbans is a natural delta.
Located at the southern tip of West Bengal, this vast marshy land is stretched over an area of 4,264 square kilometres. This, by the way, is just the part located in India. It extends further into Bangladesh as well.
The area is a network of intersecting creeks and tributaries giving rise to a dense mangrove forest.
It also shelters a horde of terrestrial, avian and aquatic species. The Sundarbans are bio-diversity at its best!
UNESCO declared it as a world heritage site back in 1997. Even with 70% area under saline water, it is still the world’s largest estuarine forest. Among the finalists of the New 7 Wonders of the World, Sundarbans draw their name from the Sundari (a Mangrove tree) trees that dominate the terrain.
And where there’s a jungle, there are wild animals. From Tigers to Claw-less Otters, Gangetic Dolphins to the Mangrove Whistler, this enticing, dark and daunting forest veils some of the most enigmatic and sought after animals and birds in the world.
